Description: A superb and rare William & Mary brass mounted, hour striking, quarter repeating ebony basket top bracket clock with alarm by Charles Gretton, London. The pierced repousse basket surmounted by a handle of leaf scrolls linked by a central bale, over cherub inset trailing vines flowers, with adjacent flame finials, over a simple moulded cornice, rectangular glazed side panels and a matching lower moulding, raised on brass bun feet.
The five pillar movement, finned and knopped, with a twin fusee movement, striking the hours and with pull repeat also striking two bells on the hour and the quarter hour. The 7.25 inch square engraved brass dial with winged cherubs head spandrels enclosing a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring. The finely matted centre with central alarm dial set beneath the blued steel hands. The alarm energised by pulling a string to the left side of the clock. The backplate with a single line border enclosing a pattern of flowers surrounding the cartouche 'Charles Gretton, London' in a reserve of foliate scrolls. It is rare to find a clock of this period with these numerous qualities, a fine piece by an eminent maker.
Further Information: 'Charles Gretton' is listed by Baillie's Clockmakers of the world as a very fine maker, free of the Clockmaker's Company in 1672 and master from 1700 - 1733.
Condition: Excellent. The movement has been fully overhauled with restored verge escapement and repeat. Minor restorations to the case.
