Fontaine’s, Receuil de decorations Interieuses, 1801 and promoted by the connoisseur Thomas Hope, author of a guide-book to his London mansion/museum entitled Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807. This design of this particular piece was popularised by a partnership between William Marsh (active 1775-1810) and Thomas Tatham (1763-1818) of a very successful firm of cabinetmakers and upholsterers based in Mount Street, Mayfair (subsequently Tatham, Bailey & Sanders). They carried out major commissions for the Prince of Wales at the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, among many other important clients. This settee was a design central to their style of this period and is almost certainly made by them.
