Description: A superb pair of George III carved mahogany arm chairs possibly by Thomas Chippendale. Each chair with a moulded oval back, with eight pierced spokes and a central leaf carved rondel. The moulded scroll arms with upholstered padded arm rests and an embroidered silk upholstered seat, with a fluted frieze and fluted tapering legs terminating in brass caps and leather roller castors, the seat rails with ‘V’ shaped cuts and holes for cross battens commensurate with chairs from the St Martin’s Lane workshops of Thomas Chippendale.
Further Information: These chairs bear a strong resemblance to a suite of furniture with similar backs was made by Thomas Chippendale for Ninian Home of Paxton House, Berwickshire, Scotland and also a set of related hall chairs probably by Thomas Chippendale for Newby Hall in North Yorkshire. This pair of chairs are depicted in Country Life Magazine in Feb 1935 in Mount Clare House, Roehampton with paintings by Constable and other furniture thought to be by Chippendale.
Condition: Excellent. Minor repairs and restorations, the chairs have recently been re-webbed and re-covered.
