George III mahogany & brass mounted serpentine commode in the manner of Ince & Mayhew

Description: A superb George III mahogany & brass mounted serpentine commode in the manner of Ince and Mayhew. The well figured top with applied moulded edge over an unusual arrangement of one long over a pair of short and two further long, graduated, oak lined, cock beaded drawers fitted with apparently original cast gilt brass rococo style handles and escutcheons. Each front corner of the chest cants and tapers downwards and has ormolu mounted cast gilt brass rams head with tapering trailing flowers. The chest is supported on shaped bracket feet. A lovely, elegant piece of furniture, giving great presence in an important room.

Further Information: The ormolu mounts are characteristic of pieces made by William Ince & John Mayhew. The partnership was in business from 1759 until 1804, probably the longest cabinet making partnership known. In 1763, they published "The Universal System of Household Furniture", dedicating it to the Duke of Marlborough, it contained around 300 designs, some of which followed the fashions established by Chippendale.

Condition: Minor old restorations, waxing. Brassware and feet apparently original.
