A pair of George III mahogany armchairs in the manner of James Wyatt

Description: A superb pair of George III carved mahogany armchairs in the manner of James Wyatt. The chairs with pierced intricately detailed heart shaped backs, moulded and carved with foliate scrolls and delightful floral detailing on the main back uprights. The arms follow with a fluid motion and each have a small flower carved into the hand rest, they then swoop down to meet the hip with further waisted, fluted and foliate carving. The seats of curved form with a serpentine front and each chair is supported on moulded square section tapering leg with spade feet to the front and at the rear with a gently tapering sabre shaped leg. These chairs have wonderful detailing and just emanate quality throughout.

Further Information: This elegant chair-back pattern, with looped ribbons in Roman delta-shield form, relates to a design by James Wyatt illustrated in the 1788 Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster. So these chairs may possible be made by Gillows. They were donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York by the Fletcher Fund in 1929, they were recently de-accessioned and after nearly 90 years in the USA’s premier museum we are delighted now to offer them for sale here.

Condition: Excellent. Minor old restorations, re-upholstered and covered in a silk damask fabric.
