Description: A superb, rare and very large Irish George III mahogany and brass bound wine cooler of oval form. The main body of cooper construction with horizontal fluting and original mercury fire gilded brass bindings to both top and the bottom, incorporating a cast shell in the top band. The cooler has a central crest depicting a Unicorn?s head and is probably related to the Creagh family of Co. Cork and Co. Clare. To each side is a cast brass lions head lifting handle and the cooler is supported by four cast bras and gilded hairy paw feet. An incredibly rare piece of substantial size, ideal for a large elegant dining room.

Further Information: The unicorn was a famous device all over Europe, and symbolised the virtue of the mind and the strength of the body. It is well known as a supporter of the Royal Arms of England, a position it has occupied since the accession of James VI of Scotland to the English throne as James I.

Condition: Excellent. Minor restorations, waxing.
