Description: A superb very rare Irish George II Cuban mahogany card table, retaining excellent original colour and patina. The rectangular top with moulded edge, over a delightful, crisp leaf and flower profusely carved scroll shaped frieze, integrating elegantly into cabriole shaped legs again profusely carved with leaves and trailing vines standing on a hairy paw foot. On the rear legs, the hip carving extends well into the back board with a facsimile of the scroll shape to the hip on the front of the table. One of the rear legs swings to support the top when open which is covered with a green baize playing surface. The quality and detail of this piece is outstanding.
Further Information: This table (or maybe its pair) is depicted in the book "Irish Furniture" by The Knight of Glynn and James Peill, page 237. This piece is part of an extremely rare group of Irish tables which have carving all the way down the leg to the ankle, a pierced frieze and a carved hip to the back leg extending into the back board, a very rare and important piece.
Condition: Excellent. Possible old restorations, waxing. Baize playing surface replaced within the last 50 years.
