George III serpentine mahogany chest in the manner of Henry Kettle

Description: A fine early George III figured mahogany serpentine fronted chest of compact dimensions and of excellent original colour and patina. The serpentine fronted top of elegant, cross-banded in flame mahogany with fronted canted corners and a moulded edge. Below four long graduated, cock-beaded, oak lined drawers fitted with the apparently original gilt-brass swan neck handles, flanked by slim canted fluted corners. The base again with shaped moulded edge, the chest is supported by shaped bracket feet. A wonderfully neat, practical and physically compact chest.

Further Information: “Henry Kettle, (Successor to Mr. Philip Bell) CABINET-MAKER/ Upholder & Undertaker, at No. 23, in St Paul’s Church-Yard, LONDON’” Henry Kettle was one of a group of cabinet makers based in St Paul’s Church Yard from the early to late 18th century. As his advertising headline of the day reads, he took over the business of another famous maker Philip Bell and was renowned for producing quality furniture. Known and marked pieces by him are characterised by the slim canted corners of this piece. The construction, balance and overall feel of this piece has all the hallmarks of a piece made by Henry Kettle.

Condition: Excellent. Minor restorations, waxing. Brassware and feet apparently original.
