George III satinwood secretaire cabinet attributed to Thomas Sheraton

A highly important piece attributed to one of England's top three 18th century cabinet makers

Description: A superb quality George III satinwood secretaire cabinet attributed to Thomas Sheraton. This fabulous piece utilizes the finest extremely well figured West Indian satinwood veneers throughout, with exquisite detailing everywhere. The top section with tulipwood banded and box strung astragal glazed doors opening to reveal a silk lined interior now with glass shelves.

Above the cornice, panelled and crossbanded with tulipwood and strung with box and ebony with amaranth inverted bell supports on an astragal shaped detailing which is surmounted with a toothed inlay and banded top molding. the bottom of the bookcase with four drawers.

The cabinet section with a top drawer divided into three compartments with integral slide and a adjustable ratchet writing surface and brass ring handles, below a central inlaid and banded cupboard door flanked by a pair of doors with inlaid oval tulipwood banding. The cabinet is supported by six square section satinwood veneered tapering legs strung with box and with beautifully executed banded ankle collar. The sides of the piece with further banded moldings and stringing. As can be expected with our attribution this piece is of the very highest quality throughout.

Further Information: Thomas Sheraton (1751 - October 22, 1806) was a furniture designer, one of the “big three” English furniture makers of the 18th century, along with Thomas Chippendale and George Hepplewhite. The cabinet is illustrated in Ralph Fastnedge’s book “Sheraton Furniture” fig. 69.

Condition: Excellent. Minor restorations, waxing. Brassware apparently original. The top section has been lined with silk and a light and glass shelves now fitted.
