Description: A fine George III mahogany chamber writing table attributed to Gillows of Lancaster. The rounded well figured rectangular top with reeded edge and retaining excellent original colour and patina. Inset to the rear, a rectangular flap which raises to reveal an ink well and pen holder. Below a cock-beaded frieze with drawer with turned knob handles, with cock beaded sides raised on ring turned tapering reeded legs terminating in brass capped castors.
Further Information: This type of table was originally supplied by Gillows for T W Egerton Esq. of Tatton Park, Cheshire, circa 1811 and for other commissions during the early 19th century. Gillows of Lancaster were one of the most celebrated of all English furniture makers. They were established in the early 18th century, and pieces made by Gillows are very desirable and extremely sought after. The Gillows archives refers to a “Chamber writing table” ref 344/14; four of these were supplied to T W Egerton Esq of Tatton Park Cheshire in 1811.
Condition: Excellent. Possible minor old restorations, waxing.
