Description: A superb George II carved giltwood console table in the manner of Matthias Lock. The beautifully detailed frieze with central ram's mask with large C-scroll shaped horns with acanthus-carved flower garlanded frieze adjoined to a pair of bold hairy legs with acanthus carved knees and hairy paw feet. Each conforming side with a similar arrangement of beautifully carved scrolling vines flowing rearwards towards a rams mask corner. The top of segmented African Malachite inside a black marble outer border. This table exudes fabulous quality and detail throughout.

Further Information: Matthias Lock (1705 - 1765) was a carver, gilder and furniture maker. Lock took inspiration from the works of Chippendale and was a highly regarded carver in his own right. He was mentor to famous carver Thomas Johnson who described him as "the famous Matthias Lock, the most excellent carver, and reputed to be the best Ornament draughts-man in Europe." His work was always bold and robust. A table with related hairy lion's legs and paw feet is at Grimsthorpe Castle, Lincolnshire. Another pair of related tables with lion's legs and paw feet, with leg veins carved into the gesso, are in the collection of Earl Spencer in the Wootton Hall at Althorp, Northamptonshire.

Condition: Excellent. Minor repairs to the carving, re-gilding. The top although originally marble, has been replaced by a later piece.
