George I Irish walnut horseshoe back wing chair

Stock Code: 1984 - SOLD

Description: A superb and very rare Irish George I walnut & beech framed horseshoe back wing chair with generous proportions offering exceptional comfort. The back formed in the shape of a horseshoe, giving supportive comfort across the circumference of the back and sweeping out into traditional wings to carefully support a slumbering head. The arms taper outwards from the chair back and roll over to form a scroll. The seat section with loose upholstered cushion, supported on acanthus carved mahogany cabriole front legs with ball and claw feet and wonderfully shaped swept rear cabriole legs terminating in a shaped trefid foot. It is extremely rare to find a chair of this form and with such a wonderfully shaped rear leg, it offers superior comfort over some of the early tightly tailored square back varieties. The chair is covered in a wonderful handmade fabric woven on a traditional 18th century loom.

Condition: Excellent. The chair has been completely stripped to the frame, joints tightened or repaired where necessary. Re-upholstered in a wonderful traditionally woven floral fabric.
