Description: A very fine quality rare George I ebonised fruitwood, quarter striking, musical, moon phase bracket clock by renowned bracket clock maker Stephen Asselin of London. The matted brass broken arch dial with repeat pendulum, date aperture, three winding apertures, border by a silvered chapter ring with applied head mask spandrels to the lower half and at the top a strike/silent to the left and a Quar Strike/Quar Silent selector to the right. In the arch an enameled moon phase with makers cartouche around the circumference, inscribed Stephen Asselin, Londini Fecit. The five pillar movement contains a triple fusee verge escapement. A beautifully engineered 6 bell chiming train strikes musically on the quarter hour and in conjunction with the musical train with the main striking train on a seventh bell strikes each hour after a musical prelude. The back plate is elaborately engraved and the whole movement is original to the case.
The brass mounted ebonised fruitwood bell top case is with brass carry handle to the top. The arched front door with brass fretwork, the sides with brass mounted glass panels, and the rear door with fitted brass mounted glass. The case is supported on brass ogee bracket feet. The quality of the case and movement, the thickness of the dial and plates, the quality of the engraving all suggest that this is a clock of the highest quality. A moon phase clock of this period by a well regarded maker is very rare. This is an exceptional clock that would find a home not only with a collector, but with someone who appreciates high quality workmanship and aesthetic beauty.
