George I walnut crook arm chair

Description: A wonderful George I walnut & needlework covered crook arm chair. The curved back with a neatly shaped waist, with solid walnut arms emanating from the waist, scrolling down to form a shepherd's crook before continuing down to join the side rail.

The seat of a tapering rectangular shape, with a serpentine shaped front valance. The chair is supported by cabriole legs to the front with carved fluted swag decoration and a C-scroll swag with trailing acanthus leaves terminating in a ball and claw foot. At the back of the chair, it is supported by a pair of tapering swept legs which form into a rectangular pad foot.

The chair is covered with a delicate 18th century needlework which is apparently of a similar age to the chair but most likely associated.

Further Information: Christian B Peper was the founder of a law firm in St Louis, Missouri shortly before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour in 1941. The firm Husch Blackwell, went on to become the largest in the state of Missouri. From a very early age Christian had a fascination with the arts and museums. Not only did he form his own comprehensive collection, he also became chief council of the St Louis Museum of Art.

A very similar chair was in the collection of the late Mr & Mrs Melvyn H Rollason. The Rollason?s were serious collectors during the pre and post-war years and their passion was for English oak and walnut furniture and English clocks from the "Golden Period?". They were true collectors indeed.

Condition: Excellent. Minor restorations, cleaning, waxing. The needlework seat has been covered with a translucent protective net. The needlework probably associated, but of a contemporary period to the chair.
