Description: A fine George III figured mahogany serpentine commode of wonderful proportions and of excellent original colour and patina, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster. The serpentine top with canted front corners and a moulded edge to three sides. Below four long graduated, cock-beaded, oak lined drawers fitted with the gilt-brass swan neck handles, flanked by slim canted corners. The base again with shaped moulded edge, the chest is supported by shaped, out-stepped bracket feet.

Further Information: Gillows of Lancaster were probably the most celebrated of all English furniture makers. They were established in the early 18th century, and pieces made by Gillows are very desirable and extremely sought after. The design of this commode is shown in Lyndsay Boynton’s book “Gillows Furniture Designs from 1760 to 1800”

Condition: Excellent. Minor restorations, waxing. Brassware old replacements, feet apparently original.

Actress Margaret Rawlings, was a hit playing Lady MacBeth and a myriad of other parts on both sides of the Atlantic during the 1930’s. Her wartime marriage to Metal Box chairman and passionate collector Sir Robert Barlow, encouraged her interest in collecting and latterly saw her making her home in Wendover, Buckinghamshire.
