Description: A fine George I burr walnut and feather banded fold over top bachelor chest. The rectangular top with fine burr veneers arranged in a double book match, feather and cross banded, opening to reveal a mirror image arrangement of figured veneers to the inside. The top when open is supported by retractable lopers, with four long graduated oak lined drawers below, fitted with brass shaped plate handles and lock escutcheons, with early quadrant style cock-beading. The burr veneers to the drawers are also laid in a double book match. The chest is supported on its original shaped bracket feet. In lovely condition, excellent rich colour and patina throughout.

Further Information: Bachelor chests were conceived in the late 17th century, as a small piece of furniture which could double as a writing desk and fit neatly into the type of living accommodations that many young men utilized when moving to the city and just beginning a career. Although small, the chest usually had plenty of room to store basic toiletry items, clean shirts, and other essentials that the early 18th century unmarried man about town would need. This particular piece is rare in utilising fine burr veneers to both the top and front, it also retains excellent colour and patina throughout.

Condition: Excellent. Minor restorations of chipped veneers, waxing. Brassware old replacements, feet apparently original.
