Description: A fine George III mahogany serpentine commode in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, of excellent colour and patina. The serpentine fronted top, with moulded edge, over a retractable brushing slide and four long graduated, cock-beaded, oak lined drawers fitted with original gilt brass handles. The base with a moulded lower edge and shaped bracket feet.

Of particular note is the deep serpentine shape to the front and quality of construction throughout.

Further Information: This form of chest of drawers with an elegant serpentine and moulded top on a rectilinear chest relates to that of others supplied by Thomas Chippendale, including at Mersham-le-Hatch, Kent, in 1768 and at Paxton House, Berwickshire, in 1774. The red wash on the underside and laminated blocks to the feet is a characteristic feature of a number of pieces of mahogany furniture at Dumfries House, Ayrshire, which were attributed to "The Dumfries House Cabinet-Maker" - possibly Thomas Chippendale.

Condition: Excellent. Minor old restorations, waxing. Brassware and feet believed to be original.
