Description: A superb George III mahogany serpentine commode of compact dimensions and of fine figured timbers and excellent original colour and patina. The serpentine fronted top, with inset oval panel, strung with ebony and box and cross banded around the periphery with applied moulded edge. The fronted flame veneered canted corners separating four long graduated, cock-beaded, oak lined drawers fitted with gilt brass ring handles. The base again with shaped moulded edge, the chest is supported by shaped bracket feet. A wonderfully neat, practical and physically compact commode.
Further Information: The distinctive S-pattern keyhole on this commode is a feature used nearly exclusively by Thomas Chippendale, although only occasionally recorded on furniture by his competitor John Cobb (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, vol. I, p. 253, and vol. II, p. 147, fig. 267).
Condition: Excellent. Minor old restorations, waxing. The handles are replacements.
