Description: A fine George III mahogany cupboard commode possibly from the workshops of Thomas Chippendale. The serpentine fronted top with moulded edge, inset with an mahogany oval panel, banded in tulipwood and strung with box. The front with a similar pair of doors over a shaped mahogany frieze with slight bracket feet. The back and base coated with a pink wash.

Further Information: Aspects of the cabinet-work on this commode parallel those found on Thomas Chippendale’s furniture at Dumfries House, Ayrshire, including the thin red wash visible to the underside of the commode, which is now regarded as a Chippendale characteristic.

Condition: Excellent. With minor restorations, the commode previously fitted with linen slides, now removed.
