Description: A George II Irish carved giltwood pier mirror, with fine detailing throughout. The mirror is adorned by a floral and fruit basket, supported on a floral carved column, bordered by carved shoulder S-shaped crestings around spoked circles and with emanating leaves. The rectangular shaped mirror plated is captured within intricately carved trailing vine and flower vertical borders. The base with a central shell, motif with S-scrolls and more fine floral carving and detailing.

This mirror shows an enormous amount of work and thought around it’s intricate design and carving, it retains a mainly original water gilding which has aged beautifully and given this mirror a tremendous natural look.

Further Information: This mirror is almost identical to another that was in Birr Castle, County Offaly, Ireland. These distinctive mirrors with shouldered crestings around curious spoked circles seem to all be from an unidentified Dublin workshop. Another example is illustrated in Knight of Glin & James Peill, ‘Irish Furniture’.

Condition: Excellent. Gilding largely original partially refreshed in places.
