Description: A fine Irish George II carved mahogany foot stool. The rectangular seat over-stuffed with a classic floral woven fabric and close nailed around the perimeter. The stool stands on cabriole legs with finely carved trailing acanthus leaves to the hip tapering down to an elegant and again finely carved hairy paw foot. The legs are joined by a carved frieze with a central leaf motif. Lovely crisp carving throughout, the timber also retains excellent colour and patina.
Further Information: The hairy paw foot is symbolic of many pieces of Irish furniture from the mid 18th century. It was an almost exclusive feature found on Irish, but not English furniture. Many examples of hairy paw feet are depicted in the book “Irish Furniture” by The Knight of Glin and James Peill. Another Irish feature is the lower carved frieze, which an English stool of the same period would probably be without. A beautifully detailed piece with excellent original colour.
Condition: Excellent. Minor old restorations, re-upholstered in a wonderful traditionally woven floral fabric.
