Description: A fine Irish George II carved mahogany side table, retaining excellent colour and patina. The top of rectangular form with moulded edge to 3 sides. The scrolling frieze with central carved concave shell bordered by trailing flower and acanthus leaf carving extending outwards toward the legs. The table stands on cabriole legs with profusely carved hips in the form of acanthus leaves, with further leaf carving to the ankle and terminating in a paw foot. A lovely piece of excellent proportions.
Further Information: This table follows closely the format of similar pieces illustrated in The Knight of Glin and James Peill’s book “Irish Furniture”. The central prominent carved shell is one of the most popular decorative features of Irish furniture of this period.
Condition: Excellent. Possible minor old restorations, waxing.
