Description: A superb George III carved mahogany Chippendale period double chair back settee. The double crest rail beautifully carved with acanthus leaves above a pierced back centred by a lattice panel, which is flanked by further acanthus carving. The vertical rails carved with blind fretwork. The arms with carved leaf hand holds and blind fretwork. The seat is covered with a rich red silk damask. The settee stands on square chamfered legs with blind fretwork and c-shape brackets to the hips and is united by pierced stretchers.

Further Information: Chippendale’s work was highly influenced by designs from China, this piece showing the that influence in all it’s glory. The crisp intricate carving is possible because of the maker’s choice of the best quality mahogany for the construction of the piece. This was obviously a commission for an important country house or estate.

Condition: Excellent. Minor restorations, rear seat rail capped to strengthen (not visible). Recently re-upholstered and re-covered in a red silk damask fabric.
