George III mahogany linen press in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster

Description: A fine George III mahogany linen press in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster, in excellent original condition. The moulded cornice with key type dentil moulding over inverted bell detailing. Below the press doors with well figured central panels, bordered by a raised moulded edge open to reveal the original oak press slides. The bottom half of the press comprises of 2 short over 2 long graduated cock-beaded drawers with brass rococo style swan neck handles with tied lace style back plates, the press is supported on ogee bracket feet.

Further Information: Gillows of Lancaster were probably one of the most celebrated of all English furniture makers. They were established in the early 18th century, and pieces made by Gillows are very desirable and extremely sought after. The design layout of this type of press and distinctive cornice design is similar to those shown in the Gillows Sketch & Estimate Book circa 1771, it is also referred to in Lyndsay Boynton’s book “Gillows Furniture Designs from 1760 to 1800”

Condition: Excellent. Possible minor old restorations, waxing.
