Description: A superb Irish George II carved Cuban mahogany console table, with crisply carved detailing and excellent colour and patina throughout. The breche violette moulded marble top of rectagular form with moulded edge, below a central carved spread eagle flanked by scrolling acanthus leaves and paterae, the sides with shell and paterae carving all on a on a cross-hatched back ground, the cabriole acanthus carved legs headed by shells, on leaf and lion paw feet.
Further Information: This form of this mid-18th century console table was rarely produced by English workshops, but was more noticeably made during this period in Ireland. A comparable example is depicted in "Irish Furniture" by The Knight of Glin & James Peill. The central carved Jupiter's eagle was a known feature on Irish tables during the 18th century.
Condition: Excellent. Possible minor old restorations, waxing. The marble top probably original.
