Chippendale period mahogany butterfly Pembroke table

Stock Code: 2241

Description: A fine rare George III Cuban mahogany drop flap pembroke table, possibly by Thomas Chippendale. The well figured solid top of serpentine outline to all sides, with a channeled profile lip around the periphery, over a cock beaded, oak lined drawer frieze drawer with opposite dummy, fitted with brass rococo style swan neck handles.

The table is supported by fluted, moulded tapering legs terminating in a beaded foliate ball foot. The legs are shaped and pierced cross stretcher. The table is of exceptional quality throughout, the channeled profile of the top and flaps, as well as the dentil tabs heading the legs are unusual and refined details and of particular note.

Further Information: The table follows Thomas Chippendale's published design for a "Breakfast Table" in virtually every detail (Chippendale's The Director, 1762, pl. LIII). While this influential pattern book was used by practicing tradesmen in London and the provinces, the beaded foliate feet, a departure from the original ?gothic? pattern, correspond to the more classical production of Chippendale's workshop, and that of his rivals, Mayhew and Ince in the late 1760s and 1770s.
