George I figured & carved walnut armchair

Description: A superb, rare George I figured & carved walnut armchair retaining excellent colour and patina. The lyre shaped back of solid walnut and detailed with figured walnut veneers to the outer uprights.

The top rail with central floral carved section, out reaching to a carved scrolled shoulder to each side. The central pierced splat, in the shape of a tapering vase with three carved flowers to the centre. The out swept, curved arms emanate from the side rails and terminate in a tightly curved eagle's head.

The chair is linked together by the seat rails which form a tapering rectangle, with an inset drop-in seat covered in a 19th century needlework. The front legs sweeping up into the seat rail frieze, with a large carved shell surrounded by carved floral decoration, the beautifully shaped cabriole legs terminate in a prominent ball and claw foot. The back legs of rounded, square tapering section, again out-sweeping and terminating in a pad foot.

A fabulous chair, enthusing quality and style.

Condition: Excellent. Minor restorations to chair frame, waxing. The drop in seat, recovered in a later 19th century floral needlework.
