George III Chippendale period mahogany linen press attributed to Gillows of Lancaster

Description: A superb George III Chippendale period mahogany linen press attributed to Gillows of Lancaster. The cornice with dentil moulding and tapered concave inverted pyramids above a blind fret frieze. The doors of fabulous flame veneered, with a rectangular outlined, serpentine shaped scallop moulding with and applied carved leaf moulding to each corner. The doors open to reveal an arrangement of five original linen drawers. The bottom half of the press consisting of two short, over two long graduated, oak lined drawers, fitted with original brassware, standing on characteristically stepped Gillows ogee bracket feet. Simple elegance in its entirety, this piece exudes quality.

Further Information: This piece is virtually identical to a press made for Richard Clowes Esq of Huntsback, Manchester in 1772 and a secretaire version of the same press made for John France of Rawcliffe Hall, Lancashire in 1766. Both these are illustrated in Susan Stuart's book "Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840" and are also listed in the Gillows workbook of that period.

Condition: Excellent. Minor restorations, waxing. Brassware, feet and slides apparently original.
