Description: A fine near pair of George III mahogany serpentine commodes in the manner of Robert Adam. The top with serpentine front and sides with applied moulded edge, over three graduated mahogany lined, cock beaded, long drawers, fitted with gilt brass swan neck handles, flanked by tapering, stepped, fluted and stop fluted pillars transitioning into square section raised legs. The sides again of serpentine form, with fluted half pillars to the rear. The use of fluted columns of this nature are characteristic of the designs of Robert Adam, the commodes appear to be of particularly good quality and retain excellent colour and patina.

Further Information: Robert Adam's name is known as much for his work in interior decoration and furniture design, as it is for his architecture. Adam must be considered along with Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite and Thomas Sheraton in the development of English furniture styles. Though he was not a cabinet-maker, Adam was one of the first to consider furniture fully worthy of an architect's attention, on finding nothing suitable to compliment his classical interiors, he designed furniture to suit. This near pair we believe have been made for the same house by the same cabinet maker, however they have probably been made some 5-10 years apart on time scale, most likely as a later match up request from the lord of the manor. Dimensions and construction qualities are basically the same save, one is just under 1" wider, with other dimensions the same, and has a paneled back rather than a boarded back.
