A pair of George III mahogany candle stands in the manner of Ince & Mayhew. The scalloped dished top supported by a turned tapering vase shaped column, terminating in an unusual tripod base, with gently swooping legs, with turned paterae, pad foot and supported by a triangular central brace.

William Ince & John Mayhew were partners in business from 1759 until 1804 and probably the longest partnership known. In 1763, they published The Universal System of Household Furniture, dedicating it to the Duke of Marlborough. It contained around 300 designs, some of which followed the fashions established by Chippendale.
