A very good Sheraton period satinwood ladies writing desk. The top inlaid with a leather writing surface, banded with tulipwood rising on a ratchet support, with removable book stop. The frieze of finest West Indian satinwood banded with tulipwood and strung with ebony. To one side a drawer, fitted with diminutive brass knobs, opening to reveal pen and ink apertures, to the other a pull out document slide to provide a practical working area. The table is supported by square section tapering legs strung with ebony fitted with square capped brass castors.

Writing tables of this diminutive form were often made for ladies for use after retiring for writing letters or diaries. They were often referred to as a chamber writing table and were mainly made in mahogany or rosewood. This very nice example in satinwood is a rarer piece altogether, with excellent figuring throughout.
