“Sunrise on the Coast” is a delightful light and airy observation, an early morning coastal scene of seaweed gatherers collecting their crop - painted by highly regarded Royal Academician: Frederick Richard Lee
Born in Barnstaple, Devon, in 1798, the son of Thomas Lee of Barnstaple, Frederick was enrolled as a student to the Royal Academy on 16 January 1818, aged nineteen. In his early year’s Lee painted similar coastal scenes to this, one of these; Sea Coast Sunrise from 1834, hangs in the Tate Gallery in London. Lee was elected to full membership of the Royal Academy on 10 February 1838. In 1848 he started painting collaborative pictures with Thomas Sidney Cooper and Sir Edwin Landseer, where Lee painted the landscape, Cooper and Landseer adding the animals. A highly accomplished and well regarded artist in his day, his work remains his lasting legacy with pictures not only hanging in the Tate, but also in galleries in San Fransisco, Devon, Norwich castle and of course the Royal Academy in London. |
