“A Siesta” - an offbeat observation of a farmyard with a donkey trying to enjoy an afternoon slumber whilst being pestered by a cockerel and a couple of hens, painted by renowned animal and genre painter - William Weekes.

Weekes was born into an artistic family - his father was the sculptor Henry Weekes RA. William spent his working life in London, amongst his favourite subjects were humorous portrayals of animals. Weekes delighted in personifying them and placing them in situations particular to humans, as seen in the paintings: 'You are sitting in my Nest', 'Prattlers and Cracklers', 'The Patient and the Quacks' and 'A Snap for the Lot'. Weekes' work shows a sensitive understanding of his subject matter and part of his success in creating such a peaceful country atmosphere lies in his affection for it. A Siesta shows off his talents superbly!
