A Breezy Day is an immaculate painted study of the launching of a fishing boat from the shore, thought to be on the East Coast of England, by German artist Theodore Alexander Weber.
Born in Leipzig in 1838, Weber was a popular marine painter who studied in the Berlin Academy of Fine Art under Wilhelm Krause. In 1856 Weber moved to Paris where he continued his studies under Isabey. This was the year when he began to exhibit at the Paris Salon, where obtained honourable mentions in 1861 and 1863. In the 1870’s Theodore spent some time in Britain where he had five works exhibited at the Royal Academy, in the 1880’s back in Germany is works were exhibited in Munich and also at the end of the century at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. He was a meticulous and hard working artist, travelling along most European coastlines on painting exhibitions. Weber’s painting always conveyed atmosphere and movement, with good use of colour and light, his paintings can be seen publicly today in museums in Cologne, Dijon, Leipzig, Melbourne, Mulhouse, Nottingham, Rio de Janeiro and Sydney! This is a beautifully painted work in its original elaborate swept gilt and leaf frame. |
