A very fine quality mahogany bracket clock by James Rule of Portsmouth. The matted brass broken arch dial with silvered chapter ring and silvered makers ring above inscribed “James Rule, Portsmouth” with applied brass spandrels to the corners. The central alarm setting disc under original blued steel hands. The five pillar movement containing the original verge escapement powered by a single fusee movement. A complex and well made repeat striking train together with a separate sprung barrel powering the alarm function, 3 bells repeat the hours and quarter hours when the repeat string is pulled, the alarm strikes on the largest bell repeatedly when after pulling the alarm string and at the time set by the alarm dial. The back plate is elaborately engraved and the whole movement is original to the case.
The bell top case is constructed in well figured mahogany with brass carry handle on the top and four gilt-brass pineapple finials. The arched front door with brass fretwork, the sides with “fish scale” brass fretwork, the rear door with fitted glass. The case is supported on brass ogee bracket feet. The quality of the case and movement, the thickness of the dial and plates, the quality of the engraving all suggest that this is a clock of the highest quality. Portsmouth makers well held in high esteem along the same vein as with many of the quality London clockmakers. This is an exceptional clock that would find a home not only with a collector, but with someone who appreciates high quality workmanship and aesthetic beauty. |
