An exceptional small and elegant George III mahogany chamber writing table by Gillows of Lancaster. The rounded rectangular top with reeded edge and small rear hinged flap enclosing a pen tray and twin inkwell recesses with bottle. Below a cock-beaded frieze with drawer (stamped “Gillows Lancaster”) with turned mahogany knob handles, raised on turned reeded legs terminating in castors. This table was designed by Gillows for T W Egerton Esq of Tatton Park, Cheshire, circa 1811. Gillows of Lancaster were probably the most celebrated of all English furniture makers. They were established in the early 18th century, and pieces made by Gillows are very desirable and extremely sought after. The Gillow archives refers to a “Chamber writing table” ref 344/14; 4 of which were supplied to T W Egerton Esq of Tatton Park Cheshire in 1811.
