A fine English Queen Anne floral marquetry longcase clock By Joshua Alsop, London. The hood with blind fret frieze under a moulded cornice, bordered by barley twist columns, the door with marquetry inlay around the circumference opening to reveal a 12" square dial with matted centre, second hand, date aperture with flower & bird engraving around and two ringed winding holes, the silvered chapter ring engraved with the makers cartouche Joshua Alsop, East Smithfield, with cast brass spandrels to the corners, striking the hours on a bell. Below the trunk door profusely inlaid floral marquetry designs, with lenticle and further marquetry designs to the door surround. The base with a central floral design with marquetry border and figured walnut plinth. An absolutely superb clock of excellent proportions with fine original marquetry work.East Smithfield was an area close to the modern City of London settled by the protestant non-conformists from France and Holland in the late 17th century. Somewhere between 40,000 and 50,000 moved here. Many of these, from all levels of society, settled in the area around East Smithfield and Spittalfields. Principally they were silk weavers and clockmakers.
