UK chases closely the USA as the world's premier art market
|
|
|
Raphael's Head of a Muse which sold for £26m at the end of last year helped the UK's psoition. |
|
The UK has almost caught up with the United States as the world’s premier art market by value, according to the latest report commissioned by The European Fine Art Foundation.
Dr Clare McAndrew, who completed the research for TEFAF in her report, The International Art Market 2007-2009, revealed that in 2009 the UK enjoyed a 29% share of the global market compared to the 30% for the US. China has moved into third place with
a 14% share.
These changes have taken place against a significant fall in the value of the whole global market, which rose to 48.1bn
Euros in 2007, before dropping back to 42.2bn Euros in 2008 and then
for obvious reasons declining to 31.3bn Euros in 2009.
Other statistics show that the UK art market employs more than 52,000 people directly in over 9000 businesses, generating more than 14bn
Euros in sales during 2008. When the market was at its peak in 2008,
close to two million people were directly employed by the art market
worldwide.
Good figures for the UK overall, however can we expect the UK to
edge ahead in 2010 and steal the lead from the US? The answer is
maybe, with Sterling hovering around £1 = $1.50 as opposed to $1.65
last summer, this might just help the UK emerging at the top of the
tree. |

Partridge Fine Art's former premises finally find a new
tenant.
|
After all the hullabaloo surrounding Partridge Fine Art's last few months before going into liquidation, their fine prime real estate
"The Palace of the Arts" has finally found a new tenant.
Halcyon Gallery, a long established London picture dealer have announced that they acquired the lease of the Grade II listed building at 144-146 New Bond Street, which was originally designed as an art gallery in 1911. They hope to open by the autumn.
“Halcyon Gallery will continue the building’s 100-year legacy as a purpose-built art space with a sympathetic design by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, the architectural firm who have designed several London landmarks such as the Barbican Centre,” said a spokesman.
The 10,000 sq ft space over three floors –
a temple to traditional antiques –
will see a new lease of life as a
haven for contemporary art. Halcyon
say that it will enable them to expand their stable of artists and exhibition programme, and give them a dedicated exhibition space for collections of rare masterpieces from Impressionism to Pop. The company operates from its flagship gallery and headquarters at 24 Bruton Street in Mayfair. The new gallery at 144-146 New Bond Street will operate in addition to this.
It is really good news that this iconic building is not being snapped up by another international fashion
house, and that the tradition of fine art will again be
bolstered in New Bond St, which will help all in the industry whether in London or in the provinces.

A taste of things to come... |
|
We have been busy over the past few months scouring the world for exciting new furniture and artworks. We have found some fantastic pieces both here in the UK, and in the USA and Europe,
these are either in transit or waiting to get the usual little bits and pieces attended to by our restorers. We hope to have a couple of these pieces available towards end of the BADA Fair, so if you are coming along next week, you may see them there. Of course we will
continue the search, so we can show more fine exhibits at the new Summer London International Fine Art Fair at Olympia.
If you can't wait to hear more about what's coming up and if you are coming to the BADA Fair next week, then come along for a chat and we will be happy to tell you more. Many of our fine new recent
acquisitions will be on show at the BADA Fair anyway, click any of the adjacent thumbnails to find out more.

NEW - The Millington Adams Spring 2010 Catalogue
|
Welcome to Spring 2010, our new 88 page catalogue is now online one with some exciting new artworks. Again produced entirely in house, we hope it provides an easy way to browse the majority of our new stock of fine period furniture, clocks and fine paintings. Our website as usual, will have the full inventory.
As with our first catalogue, to help save the environment and obviously the high printing costs, "Spring 2010" will only be available via the internet, yet in a traditional catalogue format. You can just leaf through the pages at will, and if so desired, link directly from the catalogue to our website to check availability and pricing. Just click the title of any artwork in the catalogue, on either the description or illustration page, to link back to that artwork on millingtonadams.com.

New descriptive artwork videos online now
|
 |
|
The title screen from one of the videos on our new TV channel, you can go backwards, forwards and better still mute the commentary! |
|
Towards the end of last year on our stand at the LAPADA Berkeley Square October Fair, some videos were taken by a production company. On
these we talked about the company and some of the furniture we had on the stand.
These videos were generally well received, so we have decided to start
making the occasional video on some of the more important stock items that we
currently have available. We hope this service will give a more in-depth look at
these pieces, each video being around 2½
minutes long.
The index page of current videos can be accessed using the "TV" main
menu button above or clicking here. We hope you enjoy them
and we would be grateful for any
comments you may have on this
new service.

The BADA Fine Art & Antique
Fair
-17th to 23rd March 2010
|
With the consternations still going on about which fair might or might not happen in June and with the demise of Grosvenor House, "some people say" that the BADA Fine Art and Antiques Fair held this month between the 17th and 23rd of March is now probably the UK's
premier Art & Antiques Fair.
We would not disagree, after two very successful years in a row, we are keeping our fingers crossed that this year will also bring interest and hopefully a few sales as well.
Millington Adams are located this year on a new stand (B30 in the middle marquee) and if you have missed out on our ticket mailing list for some reason or another, if you click the image next to this article it will link you through to a printable complimentary E-ticket. Hope to see you at the Fair! |
